Meeting with Alberta Senators
Alberta Municipalities’ Executive Committee met with Senators Patti LaBoucane-Benson, Paula Simons, and Karen Sorensen on December 9. Together, they comprise three-quarters of Alberta’s current Senate delegation. Their discussion covered a wide range of issues of interest to Alberta municipalities, including:
- Federal government support for retroactive pay for RCMP members
- Potential creation of a provincial police service
- the role municipalities play in affordable housing
- the need for better broadband internet service, particularly in rural and remote communities
- staffing challenges faced by post offices in small communities related to the pandemic
- Alberta Municipalities’ Future of Municipal Government project
The group also discussed Senator Simons’ December 2 Senate inquiry about the relationship between the federal and municipal governments. We were encouraged by the Senators’ interest in municipal priorities.
