Cannabis Update

In less than three months, Bill C-45: The Cannabis Act comes into effect across Canada. AUMA has continued to press on matters important to Alberta municipalities regarding legalization, including the call for a fair portion of the cannabis excise tax to offset municipal costs.

On July 19, AUMA received an update from Philip Bryden, Q.C., Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Solicitor General providing an overview of the Province’s efforts to prepare for legalization. The email also includes links to the Province’s tools and resources, including regulations and licensing through the AGLC.

AUMA continues to work on various tools to support municipalities, including the development of a tool to support you in tracking costs associated with cannabis legalization. We thank everyone who responded to our call for feedback on the draft tool.  The deadline to submit comments was Friday, July 20, and we are finalizing the tool this week and anticipate it will be released August 1. Watch next week’s Digest for further updates. The cost tracking tool, along with other resources, will be made available through the Cannabis Legalization page on our website.
