Utility Plant Coordinator

This position reports to the Manager of Utilities.
This position is responsible for daily operation, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and operational oversight of the water and wastewater treatment plants, treated water pumping stations, reservoirs, and raw water intake facilities owned or operated by the Town of Whitecourt. The position will work 40 hours per week. Weekend shifts will be scheduled as required. The successful applicant must be prepared to work overtime and respond to operational or regulatory issues outside regular working hours.
Key duties will include:
- Responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment plants and associated facilities.
- Maintains high quality drinking water and acceptable wastewater treatment through daily testing to meet Alberta Environment and Protected Areas standards and license requirements.
- Operates and maintains treated water reservoirs, water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, pumping stations, and intake facilities.
- Assumes primary operational authority for environmental compliance related to drinking water and wastewater approvals, licensing, and reporting requirements.
- Directs environmental monitoring programs including regulated sampling, testing, documentation, and online.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- The successful candidate must possess and maintain Alberta Environment certification in Water Treatment Level III and Wastewater Treatment Level II or higher.
- Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of experience operating similar water and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Successful completion of NAIT’s Water and Wastewater Technician Program is an asset, with additional related technical training considered an asset.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Drivers License

Working knowledge of SCADA systems is required, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions for this position include:
- Frequent lifting of materials, chemical containers, parts, and equipment up to 50+ lbs.
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking within treatment plants, pump stations, reservoirs, and intake facilities.
- Bending, kneeling, crouching, trunk rotation, pushing, and pulling required during maintenance, inspections, sampling, and operational tasks.
- Work performed on uneven, wet, icy, or slippery surfaces including plant floors, lift stations, reservoirs, and intake structures.
- Exposure to noise, odours, wastewater, treatment chemicals (including chlorine and other process chemicals), and mechanical equipment during plant operations and inspections.
