The Senior Planner will be responsible for the oversight of development and planning work consisting of subdivision, development permits and compliance, and Land Use Bylaw enforcement including day to day supervision of the Development Planning Team. Using a lens of diversity and inclusion, the successful candidate will implement principles of quality urban design through the application of the Beaumont Urban Design Guidelines, and will provide input into large scale area planning programs, redistricting applications and a variety of special projects.   You are a relationship builder and collaborative problem solver who will apply your solid understanding of urban design, land use policy and legislation to shape Beaumont’s built environment . 

 

What YOU’RE Responsible for:

  • Supervision and mentorship of development planning staff and contributing to the continuous improvement of processes and service delivery. The nature of this work is multi-disciplinary within a team environment.

  • Project managing development applications from the initial inquiry through to issuance, oversee input from review groups, resolve conflicts, and coordinate the overall approval process.

  • Preparation of reports and making presentations to Council, Committee of the Whole, Beaumont’s Urban Design Panel, the Subdivision Development Appeal Board, and in public meetings and at engagement events as required.

  • Providing sound technical advise to senior leadership and Council on planning policy, regulations and statutory documents. 

  • Monitoring legislation, the Land Use Bylaw, and development trends, and providing recommendations on the impacts to bylaws, statutory plans, and other policies. 

  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders.

     

What YOU Bring:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in planning/urban design/architecture/geography or another relevant professional field with a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible related experience.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Full membership with the Alberta Professional Planners Institute or eligible.

  • The ability to clearly and persuasively present ideas and recommendations that involve complex and politically sensitive issues to internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and written.

  • Well-developed research, analytical, and strategic skills. 

  • Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to balance multiple projects and priorities to bring projects to completion using sound judgment, initiative and creativity in a fast-paced, politically sensitive environment with minimal supervision. 

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in negotiating and conflict resolution, and in building and maintaining relationships.

  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment and balance multiple priorities within defined timelines.

  • Broad understanding of planning principles and legislation.

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • A salary range of $85,121.40 - $111,056.40 per annum (based on experience and qualifications)
