Job Description

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the General Manager of Protective Services, reporting to the Fire Chief or designate, and stationed out of assigned station, the Lieutenant is responsible for the operational readiness of their assigned station. The position is responsible for reporting all activity, and the need for specific training based on operational requirements to the assigned Captain. The position also fills the role of Truck Officer during emergency response as required.
 

Position Responsibilities

Daily Operations:

  • Responsible for the overall operational readiness of the crew, apparatus, and equipment of their assigned station;
  • Implement department goals and objectives, establish work priorities, schedule and coordinate work to be accomplished per shift;
  • Responsible for payroll, training records, incident response reports, and personnel records;
  • Responsible for cleanliness of station and maintenance of apparatus, tools, equipment and all other Fire Department property;
  • Responsible for the security of the station during shift;
  • Advise assigned Captain on all aspects of operational readiness for their assigned station;
  • Report for duty to their assigned station on time and in appropriate uniform;
  • Operate daily as officer in charge of assigned crew;
  • Provide recommendations for fire and rescue equipment to be used in day-to-day operations and training;
  • Participate in daily training exercises and classroom lectures and prepare and conduct training for department, as assigned;
  • Conduct demonstrations, public tours and public speaking on fire safety, fire prevention, CPR, fire extinguishers, first aid and various other topics;
  • Follow instruction and direction from assigned Captain;
  • Abide by Yellowhead County Human Resource Policies, as well as Yellowhead County Fire Department Standard Operation Guidelines, Policies, Procedures, and Codes;
  • Assist, as required, in organization/department projects;
  • Respond to call backs for emergencies as requested; and
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Emergency Response

  • Maintain a good working knowledge of firefighting techniques and emergency medical services;
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle and fitness level;
  • Respond to emergent situations as required or requested; and
  • Assume command during emergency incidents in accordance with Yellowhead County standards.

Other:

  • Accomplish such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

     

Qualification, Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements

  • Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent is required;
  • Post-Secondary Degree in related field considered an asset;
  • NFPA Standard 1001 – Firefighter or equivalent required;
  • NFPA Standard 1041 – Instructor I or equivalent required;
  • NFPA Standard 1002 – Operator considered an asset;
  • NFPA Standard 1021 – Fire Officer Level I considered an asset;
  • Standard First Aid Level C and CPR;
  • Valid Class 3 Drivers License with air brake endorsement;
  • Minimum two (2) years of emergency service experience;
  • Experience in leadership role considered an asset;
  • Completion of Defensive Driving; and
  • ICS 100, 200, and 300 considered an asset.

Working Environment

  • Approximately 75% of the time in field and 25% in office;
  • Emergency response duties are conducted under all weather, environmental and road conditions during all hours of the day for extended periods of time;
  • Services are provided in a highly stressful and hazardous environment that requires correct immediate action to resolve incidents;
  • A high degree of physical effort is required in providing emergency services and the required training;
  • The Lieutenant must be able to act as the Incident Commander;
  • Travel is required throughout the region including travel in an emergency response mode; and
  • Evening and weekend meeting and training session attendance may be required from time-to-time.


The salary range is $73,474 to $91,108 per year. Yellowhead County offers a competitive benefits package.
