Access & Privacy Coordinator - Grande Prairie Police Service
The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) is seeking a skilled and motivated Access and Privacy Coordinator to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a newly established municipal police service and support the implementation of strong privacy, transparency, and information governance practices.
The Access and Privacy Coordinator administers GPPS’s compliance with Alberta's Access to Information Act and the Protection of Privacy Act, as well as other applicable policing, privacy, and information management legislation. This role supports the service in maintaining transparency and accountability while safeguarding sensitive personal, operational, and investigative information.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the management of access to information and privacy requests under ATIA and POPA, including intake, tracking, review, and responses.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) for reviews, investigations, and compliance matters.
- Advise leadership and staff on privacy, access, and information management matters, ensuring legislative compliance.
- Conduct Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) for programs, technologies, and operational initiatives.
- Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and compliance frameworks to support transparency and privacy protection.
- Develop and deliver privacy training and orientation to GPPS employees.
- Collaborate with oversight bodies, municipalities, and other police services to support secure and lawful information sharing.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration, Law, Information Management, or a related field is required. An equivalent combination of education and significant related experience may be considered.
- Certificate in Information Access and Protection of Privacy (IAPP) is considered an asset.
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible experience in access to information, privacy, or related legal/policy roles.
- Experience interpreting and applying ATIA, POPA, and other relevant legislation in a municipal, police, or government environment.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) and developing policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
- Experience liaising with external oversight bodies (e.g., Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner) and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience managing privacy inquiries, complaints, and breaches, including formal responses.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain complex legislation to diverse audiences.
- High discretion, ethical standards, and sound judgment in handling sensitive information.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and build consensus across stakeholders.
- Experience in policing, justice, or security-sensitive environments is an asset.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, SharePoint and Adobe is an asset
- You will be required to complete an Police Enhanced Security Clearance.
Hours
The standard workweek consists of an average of 35 hours, with the specific schedule being determined by the immediate supervisor.
Compensation
Salary range of $37.02 to $47.86 as per hour as per the Out-of-Scope Agreement.
