Small Group Learning Communities
Small Group Learning Communities
These small group learning communities will allow municipalities to collaborate on real issues municipalities are facing, while working through solutions to these problems with the advice of experts. The small group learning communities will be more self-directed than the cohorts and will provide participants with the ability to specify which issues will be dealt with. With support of facilitators, participants will work with other municipalities in the community to develop common asset management challenges and develop solutions.
These participant-directed communities will facilitate joint learning and the sharing of ideas beyond the activity itself. Participants will:
Discuss and develop solutions to issues that your municipality is currently facing related to asset management.
Develop collaborative relationships with municipalities facing similar challenges.
Participation in the communities will include at least two in-person workshops, as well as the ability to communicate with the rest of the community and receive further coaching if needed. Participants will be expected to report on their progress.
Participants will be asked to sign an acknowledgement of the participant commitment expectations, and council will be required to pass a motion endorsing the municipality’s participation. This will ensure that participants are well supported in their time commitment and have organizational support to implement the learnings from the communities.
There is no fee to participate in the communities. Group learning activities, support from the project team, and guidance from asset management experts are provided free of charge for the duration of the project.
For in-person meetings, food and refreshments will be provided free of charge, though travel and accommodation costs will not be reimbursed.
Participants may be asked to work with the project team to provide at least one meeting space to hold a meeting or workshop at some point during the project. Ideally, participants will alternate hosting duties to allow for a similar cost and travel commitment among all cohort members.

Asset Management Has No Dumb Questions: Beginner communities learn about asset management (AM) concepts in one session and then teach them to others in the next session. This allows for AM training for staff, enhances external communications, and facilitates knowledge sharing.
The Software Debate: A forum for communities to share their knowledge, experiences, and learnings with software implementation.
Collaboration: A series of exercises to support communities in developing knowledge and skills for interdepartmental and council collaboration that can continue beyond the initial workshops. Includes ideas for creating an effective culture and navigating change. It also covers ways to understand and identify the roles and communication needed for the team to function well.

The funding received from FCM’s Municipal Asset Management Program has allowed for participation in the activities to be free aside from travel costs. This is a great opportunity for municipalities to learn the basics of asset management and receive support from experts in how to get started on or take the next step in their asset management journeys.
